These hand made cups are designed for use in a gongfucha or senchado (gyokuro) setting. They are also a great size for tasting spirits like moutai and awamori. They can hold 30mL (1oz) of liquid at maximum capacity but ideally you’ll fill these with 15 to 20mL of liquid. That way they can be picked up without risk of spilling. This size is perfect for gyokuro, which is why I added them to the shop.
Their design is based on lacquered hats called ‘eboshi’ worn by Japanese officials and aristocrats during the Nara and Heian periods. I found a great article about eboshi, which you can read about here.
